Had an interesting one a few months back which could apply to part of your
problem.
When the tape ran out, the unit would shut down with alarm coming on.
Instead of going into rewind, the tape just tightened up on the head and
stopped it, causing the error and setting off the alarm. The strange thing
was that the "beginning of tape" sensor worked ok. Replaced the "tape end"
sensor did not cure the problem. Turned out to be the center post LED just
at threshold of failure.

As to loosing the memory.... Old Timers Disease ??!!
