Glenn, Here's a tip on a CTC169. I had this problem with this set a couple of years ago. The set would be playing fine and then it would shutdown, you would here a fairly loud pop when shutdown occured, and then in a few seconds, it would restart on its own. The fix was to replace CR4111, this diode comes as part of a kit, #202055. Just thought I'd mention this in case you haven't found your problem yet.
