I would say you guys won't believe this but then again you will;) I called 
Philips Techline on this set and he couldn't get it to save the vertical 
settings either. However I didn't have the original remote for the tv and 
was using another Philips remote that I had hagning around. He told me that 
he wasn't sure but some of these new 4:3 direct view tv's have a expanded 
4:3 mode on the remote and it isn't listed in the menu at all which 
obviously will make the picture stretch off the screen a bit. I finally got 
the original remote from the customer and that was it. It was in expanded 
4:3 mode. When you change the channels on this tv it tells the channel 
number and weather it is in stereo or mono but never displays any picture 
mode unless you press the button on the remote to change it.

What a pain, a eeprom that came in corrupted and couple of hours of time due 
to some misplaced feature.

Reguardless this is a heads up for everyone about this feature.
