[TechAssist] Dell computer earphone jack

I purchased this dell computer about a year and a half ago.running windows XP.
Not very good with it yet but I tried to use the headphone jack on the front
and I get no sound. Tried turning up the volume and checked the on screen
volume control and can't get it to work. Is this supposed to work like a stereo
when you plug it in it shuts off the speakers or is there something I'm
missing. I see a lot of computer literate people on here and thought maybe
someone would know something.
