[TCUG] Re: Zig Zag markings and controlled pedestrian crossings

In Kent a number of crossings were installed with two lines of zig-zags in
the centre of the road, separated by hatching. The intention was to separate
the opposing flows, creating a virtual central reserve, usually to
accommodate right turns nearby. Then we realised that pedestrians were using
the middle of the crossing as a "safe" place to wait. They would exploit a
gap in traffic on the side nearest to them and move to the centre of the road
- while the signal controller sought a gap in both directions. Although we
knew that the hatching afforded little protection, clearly the pedestrians
did not... We no longer mark new crossings in this manner and have changed
the markings on most of the rest.

Here in Derby we would agree with Peter, however we would use 2 sets of
4x2 markings with hatch markings between. The stopline would extend across
this hatched area on both approaches. This arrangement exists on several
sites in Derby and on at least one I did at my previous Authority.

Dear All,

The Regulations, Schedule 4 Part 1, requires that the road markings for a
controlled area should consist of two or more longitudinal zig-zag lines. As
the text does not prohibit doubling up the central lines it is considered by
East Sussex CC that this is acceptable.

In addition, the Regulations do contain a supplementary clause (8) to the
effect that, even if the road marking requirements are not met in every
respect, the controlled area will nevertheless be treated as complying with
the Regulations provided it does not materially affect the general appearance
of the crossing. We have discussed this informally with the DfT who agree
this interpretation appears reasonable and that, provided it is clearly a
crossing and no adverse safety audit issues have been raised, there should be
no problem with the layout.

We were also advised that the diagrams contained within the Regulations are
illustrative and may not necessarily apply to every circumstance.
Each authority should, therefore, make a judgement based on their own
particular site layout and the local conditions.

It must be said that the above is my view on behalf of East Sussex County
Council and it entirely possible that this could be challenged.

Hello Peter
We have not done this and would suggest that, without DfT approval it would
be illegal.

However - why not mark a painted island between the two lines and treat as a
dual c/way?

The "island" only needs to be about 0.5 metres wide.
Job done in my opinion and additional conspicuity.

Grahame.

[TCUG] Zig Zag markings and controlled pedestrian crossings

Hi All,
Can any one advise on the legality of using two lines of central zig zag
markings on a single (standard two way crossing) without a central
island. Is it legal?, or does it need DfT approval, has anybody done it
to improve the conspicuity of a facility.

You help and advice would be very much appreciated.
