If you want to try really wacky do as in Rome.  

Get to the crossing and just walk confidently - don't look at the
approaching traffic, while the traffic flows around you.  They give way for
just the bit of road you are on.  It 'works' but scary the first time you
try and I have no idea what the accident rate is, though the loss of
capacity is minimal.

They drive on the wrong side to draw your sword as well.
