Hey Dale,
Good question. You look at the initial thrust. We care about the initial
lift-off and the rocket clearing the tower/rail at a safe speed.
I usually target 5:1 min, look for 10:1 average at RSO table, and enjoy the
hell out of > 10:1 flights, sometimes marking as heads-up (or if a long
impulse like our saucer this weekend).
In your case, with an initial thrust about 35lbs, rocket weighs 10lbs, 3.5
factor - want 5
J350 would be > 180 pounds so that's like 20-1
J275 would be > 75lbs, so that's like 7.5-1
J180 would be > 80lbs, so that's similar
or, double check your CP/CG balance, just wait for no wind, weathercock the
flight at 5 degrees at the away pad, call it a heads up
at the next launch and fly the J135. Let me check it out.
The next and most important question is the construction of the rocket - is
it glas/phenolic or just paper tubes?
Because we shouldn't be worried about 5:1 with something like that.
I wouldn't be recommending a K-Motor for the initial flight if we haven't
done the above.
But, my choices: K454 Skidmark, K250W-P, K695R ... :-)
Hope that helps, fire away with questions - I neglected to say there are a
lot of great CTI loads, but it sounds like you
already have RMS 54-1280/1706 hardware

I have a modified LOC Black Brandt (about 2.5ft shorter) weighs 7.2lbs
with everything minus motor & casings. If having a 5:1 ratio is minimum,
when I add 2.5lbs using a J135 I have 9.7lbs total lift off weight. When I
calculate the ratio on the average thrust verses I get 3.6: 1 and with the
peak thrust 6.3: 1. So, do we calculate the ratio for liftoff on the
average or peak thrust? Would this be a safe motor for this rocket weight?
Also, Rod Lovely, which K motor were you recommending after its maiden
flight?
Thanks,
Dale

AeroTech order is going in tomorrow afternoon. If you need motors for
DA or beyond please order by 3pm. Sorry I meant to make an announcement
at the launch. Will there
be a Nike drag race? Do we need K2050’s?

we are missing a aeroteck 54mm 852 casing that must have flown out of a
rocket today. Please let me know if anyone finds it.
