Every flight of my Nike Smoke (10 flights so far) have used a smoke tracking
canister under chute (tied to kevlar shock cord).

Under a clear sky, they show up very well and last a long time using a 48"
chute.

Just a thought

But how long does the glycerin fog last, or is there an alternative that we
could use to produce smoke. There are smoke candles that are used to detect
leaks in hvac systems. These candles burn for a set amount of time and then
go out. The 30 second candle produces 4000 cubic feet of smoke

You'll have to do the redox equations to figure out what volume to burn for
a given temperature.
My plan was to use a high pressure pump and a burn chamber made out of those
heating elements.
I planned on using a 1lb 4A SLA 12v battery which could double as ballast
anyhow and just let us fly
a larger motor.

Probably the most massive amount of smoke can be made by using a fogger
nozzle like the below:
http://www.planetnatural.com/product/fogg-it-nozzle/

And simply inject it in the burn chamber.
You'll run an inlet vent on your nosecone right through the burn chamber.
A new "modern" smoke with no nasty chemicals.

But, I wonder how much of that stuff you can atomize.

The tracking smoke I used before I once got it to smoke on the way up, but
we need to do this
to at least 10K' AGL to even see anything worth while.

And we'll want to shut it off on descent to prevent fouling up the recovery
gear.

Make a prototype and we can figure out how to control it with a processor.

Yes, I do have designs for something like this with a pump and
glycerine smoke generator.
But alas, something for next year ... too many projects this year ;-)

Thanks, James. That was very interesting and informative. I wonder if
we can duplicate the tracking smoke on a smaller scale. Could be
interesting.
