If it's the cap that goes over the axle splines It seals the end of the axle flange and prevents gear oil from seeping into the CV Joint.

Didn't you just have this problem a few months ago?

that's what my bus just sounded like...evidently the axle nuts backed off on the driverside axle...oh well, it's time to replace those boots anyway.
 
i do have a question though...there is a little cap thingy that goes between the cv joint and the transmission what is that cap thingy and do i need it? mine is smooshed and bent and everything else....evidently when the axle came loose it shot that piece under the tire.
