I would call the installer of the AC back and have him fix the problem.  Sounds 
like he screwed up.

The AC (central air) was installed in the fall replacing 2 little window ACs 
and old, scary heat strips.  The electrician assured me that the set up was 
going to work perfectly.  

When I just realized that the hot water heater and the AC are on the same 
switch I figured this was not a good idea.
