I had to change the alternator on my vanagon also. I went to my local Autozone
and they changed the pulley for me.

Subject: [tcb] Vanagon Alternator please help

Hey all-again this is a vanagon question and I don't know if all buses have
same
Alternator but here I go....... Okay, I got the alternator out (85 Westy
vanagon) and trying to reuse/save the pulley, fan and I got the mounting
hardware-i cannot get the mounting nut to budge off to take off and put onto
new
alternator! If I twist to loosen, then the fan and whole mech. Spins, if I
hold
the fan and nut and go in opposite, I started bending one of the fan
blades---Ah!!!!! I used some liquid wrench and it didn't help, I know I have
women strength wrists, but if I couldn't get it off and am bending the fan
blade
then what am I doing wrong? Is there a locking key? I see one on the new one,
but the fan spacers are on old, so how do I get a locking nut off?

Thanks so much and no haven't searched Samba yet(isn't user friendly in my
opinion) and I leave in 3days to head to MN in the Vanagon were our hopes! ;-(
tear.
I guess better it goes out before our trip than on the road.
