To my knowledge, It is a late 66 or very early 67 type 1 starter. I have seen
them before.

OK all you VW gurus sitting around doing nothing cause it is too hot to work
on your VW; I have a VW tech question for you.

Replacing a starter in a 6V VW that has been converted to 12V. Yep, still has
the 6V flywheel. In doing this I have always just used a regular 6V starter.
Works great, have never had a problem with one. Ok, so here is the problem:
Digging though my stash of used original 6V Bosch starters I find one that
looks good and clean and appears that it would be a good candidate to use. It
is a genuine apparently untouched original 6V Bosch in all respects, correct
size, correct 6V gear etc. Solenoid stamped 6V. Just one difference: on the
body of the starter where it is normally stamped 6V 05PS, it is stamped 12V
08PS. Hmm; is this thing a 12V starter hiding in a 6V body? Install it; crank
the engine; yep, it's obviously a 12V starter motor, not a 6V.

So where did this thing come from? VW had to have installed originally a 12V
starter in a car with a 6V flywheel. Maybe a very early 67 bug or even Type
III when they were in the early stages of converting to 12V and were still
installing engines with the earlier 6V flywheel? I have no idea and have never
seen one of these starters before to my knowledge. Anyone have an idea?
