You have several options:
 
Regular plates:. Needs inspection/$50 or so a year, no mileage limits
YOM plates: Must be approved by DMV, an extra $15 a year, requires inspection, 
no mileage limits
Classic plates: same as above minus the DMV inspection of the plates
Antique Plates: $50 or so for 4-5 years. No inspection. Mileage and use 
restrictions, although I've never had a problem.
