I've tried both. The static timing seems to be right on the mark, but the
timing light is way off.

I just remembered I won an EMPI "Accu-fire" kit at some car show. I think I
will try them tomorrow. I don't have very high expectations, but who knows.

No dwell. In my opinion, the dwell is too much nit picking. I can only keep
compufires alive for awhile before they burn up. I just put in a petronix and
it is different, we'll see. But I know that I will never go anywhere in my bus
without a set of points. But dwell is too much tech.
It sounds to me like your timing is off. Are you using a static or timing
light?

When I set the points and start it up, it runs rough and backfires in both
carbs. If I try to set the timing it's way off.

I'll give you a call this weekend.

    Thanks,

    Ronnie

I keep reading about setting points and checking the dwell and all that.
I have never used a dwell meter on a volkswagen. I set the points. Check the
timing and leave it alone. I do agree with Dan and say that Comp-u-fire is a
good way to go. I just have not had good luck with it myself. I prefer an MSD,
but way too expensive. Without listening to your engine, it's hard to diagnose
what it is doing. I am going to stay in town this weekend. send me an e-mail
later in the week and maybe I can make a run to The Woodlands. Later---mark

        Comp-u-fire!
Once they wear you can not set them with a feeler gage.
Keep fiddling with them till you get the dwell reading you want with
the meter.

Okay I give! After two hours of trying to set the points at .016,
checking with the dwell meter and they read anywhere from 28 to 39, what is the
secret? I've tried two sets of points with the exact same results.

          Help!
