Image Courtesy TPWD: Lost Maples State Park Dear Neil, Our Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is facing severe budget cuts at the Texas Legislature. While the budgets of all state agencies will be reduced this session because of the state's revenue shortfall, the proposed cuts in Parks and Wildlife funding would have serious and detrimental impacts. These include the possible closure of seven state parks, the elimination of local parks grants, a virtual end to repairs at state parks, and reductions in staffing the nongame wildlife program. Tell your legislators to restore enough money to maintain the state parks system and to allow the agency to ramp back up as state finances improve. We need to tell our legislators: Increase the proposed allocation of the state's sporting goods tax revenue to Parks and Wildlife by at least $10 million. Authorize Parks and Wildlife to retain ALL revenue generated by state parks. Appropriate to Parks and Wildlife ALL dedicated funds generated by specialty license plates for parks and wildlife. Appropriate sufficient state matching funds for Parks and Wildlife to qualify for all available federal funds. Approve money for debt service to allow Parks and Wildlife to spend all authorized bond money for capital repairs at state parks. Let your legislators know that parks and wildlife programs are important to you and all Texans! Funds must be restored to meet the public's growing outdoor recreation needs and to allow state parks to continue to be economic engines for their communities.
