This is common story on car restorations; not just VWs. Can't tell you how many horror stories I have heard similar to this. People ask me all the time about a place to take a VW for resto work. I have only 3 in the US that I will recommend; non of whom are cheap. That's not to say there are not other good ones out there; but before you give your VW to anyone for resto work do a really good background check and seek out others who are satisfied with their work. A good honest resto shop is extremely hard to find; and this applies equally for men and women. I spent $5,000 to get my bus soda blasted plus the body work done. The man got locked up, and my bus sat there to rust much to my dismay. And what little of the primer application...the little that was done was of poor quality. This time it had to be sand blasted again. Then the man who jell topped my camper top did a poor job to the tune of $1,500. These are not VW people but they were professionals. Now I don't have the funds to carry this on. Maybe because we are women the men think they can take advantage of us. That was not intended to sound sexist, but I was not served.
