Thanks Gerald.  I knew someone out there would have some straight poop on this
thing.

The pictures are from 2002. It was a concept car back then. I'd have to see
something with an official VW seal to believe it is going into production.

It achieved real world 245+ mpg by traveling at 45mph for several hundred
miles, with an escort, on the nearly perfect road surface that is the German
Autobahn. 100+ mpg in daily use should be a possibility though.

It uses a single cylinder diesel as a power plant.

I don't believe the $600 price tag because, if I remember correctly, when I
first read about it many years ago it's made mostly of carbon fiber panels to
reduce weight. If they've changed to a less expensive material and increased
the weight then the fuel economy will also drop.

I don't think there's enough room inside to fit all the safety gear that would
be required for U.S. sale anyway a normal sized airbag would blow that little
cab apart. And if they do manage to make it road legal for over here the
version we get will be so altered and heavy that it will just be a $30,000
novelty vehicle that gets 50 - 60 mpg at a poor max speed of 60mph

Gerald

P.S.

The original articles I read also stated that it is a 2 seater, not single
seater. The seats are "inline: like a cockpit. Passenger behind the driver.
That also means there is room for some groceries if one uses it for flitting
around town after getting freaked out by being blown off the highway the first
time a semi (or maybe even just a VW bus) passes them.
