Thanks Clive for this very informative, and well thought-out post. I'm up
for a new phone soon, and will seriously consider the N91.

Cheers,

Mark

Subject: [talks-uk] Talks and the N91

Hello Fellow Talks users,

I have been the happy owner of the Nokia N91 for a week and would like
to post my personal observations and tips which may be of help to
current and future owners of this pocket marvel.

First, I like the design and very tactile keyboard. The sliding cover
is your quick access to the music program with controls for
play/pause, stop, forward/rewind and next/previous track. there is no
audio output when skipping forwards/backwards through a track, which I
have found is very fast. All connections are well-defined and it is
great to plug in standard headphones to enjoy music and podcasts.
Also, the USB connection is excellent and data transfer between phone
and PC is fast. The sound quality from the built-in speaker is very
good and quite acceptable for either music or speech.

I decided to purchase my phone from Computer Room Services and have
Talks installed. I had the US English Eloquence running and decided
to install the UK English speech engine. This can be done with Talks
running, but make sure it is installed to the phone's memory, not the
hard drive, which is a physical hard disk and would lead to timing
issues with speech. You can have both engines installed, just select
which one you would like to use from Talks settings.

My first observation when switching on the phone for the first time is
the default standby mode. Active standby is on by default which means
you have to move the joystick to the desired program icon and press it
in to select it, rather like point and click with the mouse. this may
be okay if you can see the screen, as Talks doesn't report which
program you have selected. I have found by turning active standby off
you can select programs with different movements of the joystick, for
example, down for profiles, right for podcasting. All these are
customisable, the same as soft keys 1 and 2, so you can set up
shortcuts for 7 frequently-used programs and activate them with one
key press.

the podcasting client doesn't come installed and you will find it on
Nokia's website:

www.nokia.com/podcasting

On this page you will find a link for software downloads for the N91,
one is SMS accelerator. I have installed both the podcast client and
SMS accelerator. Talks works extremely well with the podcast program
and you have full control of your podcasts. Text messages go out much
quicker with the SMS Accelerator.

It is very easy to establish connection with your wireless connection,
which is essential for downloading podcasts. this can also be used
for setting up e-mail.

I am really impressed with the music player, which is fully accessible
with Talks. It is very easy to keep track of your music files. You
can even adjust such settings as shuffle, repeat and equaliser
settings.

I am very pleased I upgraded to the N91 and highly recommend it for
day-to-day use. It has all the usual functions found on the Nokia
phones with some advanced features which are easy to use.

One downside for us is the phone's tutorial, which is graphical so
inaccessible with Talks, but the excellent online help will soon have
you sorted if you need to know what to do.

I hope this brief overview is helpful to everyone on the list.

Best wishes,

Clive Pallett
