Hi Jackie,
It is a known issue that if the phone is unlocked, or Talks is not muted,
and you get an SMS, you won't hear the tone, only a beep.
I don't understand the ringtone problem though, except to say that it might
be worth the lady upgrading the firmware on the N82. This does help with
some sound issues.

Could I please run this past any of you on behalf of a friend using an
N82? I'm quite baffled, but someone else may have come across the
problem she is experiencing.
The lady concerned has an N82 running TALKS. She keeps asking me why
her ring tone doesn't stay the same, and comes out as a small beep when
someone sends her a message. I've set it to numerous tones for her over
the phone, but it seems to default to this beep sound which isn't
helpful to her. I've activated and reactivated her general profile, and
checked the assigned tone she chooses for message alerts is present.
Has anyone else seen this before? I certainly haven't.
