Wicab, Inc. in Middleton, WI is developing a new technology that has the 
potential to provide assistive benefits to blind individuals by enabling 
greater independence. As an assistive tool, the BrainPort vision device may 
enhance important functions as mobility, orientation, reading, object 
recognition, employment, and recreation. The BrainPort system presents 
information to the brain via electrical stimulation of the tongue, augmenting 
normal sensory channels. The device consists of an electrode array for the 
tongue, a video camera, and a control system.
