Hi all, This digest had two extremely interesting articles related to disabilities, so I thought I’d share it with the list. The first article describes how a company which provided disability services was successfully sued by one of its employees for descrimination under the ADA when it fired the employee in question, instead of providing accomodation. ValleyLife allegedly fired employees with disabilities instead of providing them with <http://askjan.org/Erguide/Three.htm> reasonable accommodations when they ran out of leave under the <http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs28.pdf> Family and Medical Leave Act. The company also allegedly didn't keep employees' medical records confidential. Disability.gov Seeks Participants for Its Third “No Boundaries” Photo Project 03/02/2015 <https://usodep.blogs.govdelivery.com/2015/03/02/disability-gov-seeks-participants-for-its-third-no-boundaries-photo-project/> Disability.gov Seeks Participants for Its Third “No Boundaries” Photo Project By the Disability.gov Team An intern, an energetic five-year-old and a current receptionist at the White House. These individuals, among others, have all been recognized as part of Disability.gov’s “No Boundaries” Photo Project series. Introduced four years ago, the series has profiled 12 individuals with disabilities, capturing the diverse skills, talents and life stories of each. Since then, their photographs (yes, actual people with disabilities, not actors or stock photography) have appeared in several Disability.gov marketing materials, including fact sheets, posters and public service announcements, to name just a few. But more importantly, their stories continue to demonstrate what people with disabilities can accomplish when given the opportunity. This spring, Disability.gov will launch its third “No Boundaries” Photo Project series by profiling four individuals with disabilities who showcase employment success. Volunteers will be chosen to represent diversity in age, ethnicity and nature of disability. Their photographs and profiles will also depict different inclusive workplace settings – for example, someone with a mobility challenge who uses assistive technology on the job or a young adult beginning his or her career. The photo shoot will occur during the week of April 13, 2015 in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Please note that Disability.gov cannot provide monetary compensation or reimbursement for any travel expenses. Once participants have been selected, the Disability.gov team will confirm a date and time for the session. If you are interested, please email your full name, phone number, location and a few sentences about why you would like to participate in the “No Boundaries” Photo Project to <mailto:disability@xxxxxxx> disability@xxxxxxx by March 27, 2015. Please include “No Boundaries” in the subject line of your email. <https://usodep.blogs.govdelivery.com/2015/03/02/disability-gov-seeks-participants-for-its-third-no-boundaries-photo-project/> Read More Wondering why you are receiving this alert if you are not subscribed to Disability.Blog? We were fortunate enough to hear her incredible story last spring. <https://usodep.blogs.govdelivery.com/2015/03/06/living-with-no-boundaries-meet-elizabeth/> Living with No Boundaries: Meet Elizabeth By Stephanie Bostaph, Communications Specialist, Disability.gov Sometimes you meet someone and know immediately that he or she makes the world a better place. You can’t say why, you just know. That’s how we felt when we met Elizabeth. Maybe it was her graceful presence, light-hearted sense of humor or contagious positivity. Whatever the reason, spending time with Elizabeth was uplifting. Elizabeth wasn’t born with a disability. She lost her sight unexpectedly nearly 12 years ago during her sophomore year of college. With her dream of being a museum curator derailed, Elizabeth faced the daunting task of figuring out what to do next. She decided to major in sociology and used employment supports to land her first job. Now she works as an information specialist at <http://www.neweditions.net/> New Editions Consulting, Inc., a position she learned about through networking. One of the projects she supports is <http://abledata.com/> AbleData, an informational resource that provides objective information about assistive technology and rehabilitation equipment. Elizabeth interacts with vendors, writes product descriptions and helps customers search for different products through AbleData’s online database. As an assistive technology user, she deeply understands the impact these tools have on peoples’ lives and careers. “Employers should look beyond the disability at what employees can do, rather than focusing on what they can’t,” she said. <https://usodep.blogs.govdelivery.com/2015/03/06/living-with-no-boundaries-meet-elizabeth/> Read More _____ <https://www.disability.gov/> Disability.gov Logo Questions about the subscription service? <https://subscriberhelp.govdelivery.com/> Contact Us STAY CONNECTED: <http://www.facebook.com/Disability.gov> Visit us on Facebook <http://twitter.com/disabilitygov> Visit us on Twitter <https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/USODEP/subscriber/new> Sign up for email updates <http://usodep.blogs.govdelivery.com/> Blog <http://www.disability.gov/home/link_to_us> Link to Us <http://www.disability.gov/widget/index> Widget <http://www.disability.gov/rss/index> RSS SUBSCRIBER SERVICES: <https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/USODEP/subscriber/edit?preferences=true#tab1> Manage Preferences | <https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/USODEP/subscriber/one_click_unsubscribe?verification=5.a49943d47d7be7ff38013fe5c9ee7c15&destination=acorange@xxxxxxxxxxx> Unsubscribe | <https://subscriberhelp.govdelivery.com/> Help _____ This email was sent to acorange@xxxxxxxxxxx using GovDelivery, on behalf of: Disability.gov · 200 Constitution Avenue, NW · Washington, DC 20210 <http://www.govdelivery.com/portals/powered-by> Powered by GovDelivery
