Here are some questions and tips to help you prepare for Test #3. These
topics cover material from chapters 6-9, plus lab exercises.
1. SCSI - Know why termination is needed. What conditions must be met when
installing SCSI devices? What factors must be considered when configuring
SCSI devices?
2. What are the similarities & differences between SCSI and IDE/EIDE
devices? What distinguishes a SCSI hard drive from an IDE drive?
3. What is the difference between low-level formatting and high-level
formatting? What are the different steps that must be followed to prepare a
hard disk drive for use on a PC? How is the formatting process of a hard
disk different from that of a floppy disk?
4. Know the common error conditions that occur on disks and how to correct
them, e.g. lost clusters.
5. What are the logical structures created on a hard disk during
partitioning and formatting? What components make up the hard disk/CD-ROM
sub-system in a PC?
6. Know the fundamental troubleshooting guidelines. What tools should be
part of the PC technician's toolkit?
7. What are the different types of PC technicians? And what are their
responsibilities?
8. What causes resource conflicts and what are the symptoms of these
conflicts? How can these conflicts be resolved? How do you check to see
resource allocation under Windows?
9. What is a batch file? How are 16-bit drivers loaded, e.g. drivers for a
CD-ROM?
10. What are the typical steps in installing an EIDE CD-ROM?
11. FAT16 had a number of limitations that FAT32 removed. What are they?
12. What are internal and external DOS commands?
13. What are the common parts of a hard disk drive?
14. Review the common problems that sometimes occur with different
peripherals, etc. as described in the textbook.
15. How do you identify hardware problems vs. software problems?
16. What are the differences between internal and external peripherals?
17. How have disk caches been implemented in the PC?
18. How are external peripherals connected to the PC? What types of ports
are used?
19. What is Safe Mode? How do you access it?
20. The PC uses which bus(es)? What is resolution? What is colour depth?
What is refresh rate?
21. What are the differences between serial and parallel data transmission?
