The following might be helpful to anyone who is unclear about what
Hjelmslev meant by a connotative semiotic.
Hjelmslev (1969 [1943]: 114):
In the last section, despite a considerable broadening of the perspective,
we have still acted as if the unique object of linguistic theory were
the *denotative
semiotic*, by which we mean a semiotic none of whose planes is a semiotic.
It still remains, through a final broadening of our horizon, to indicate
that there are also semiotics whose expression plane is a semiotic — and
semiotics whose content plane is a semiotic. The former we shall call
*connotative* semiotics, the latter *metasemiotics*.
That is, for Hjelmslev, a connotative semiotic is a semiotic that has a
denotative semiotic as its expression plane. Applied to SFL stratification,
language is the expression plane of a connotative semiotic, and context is
the content plane of a connotative semiotic.
A common misunderstanding of Hjelmslev's model in the SFL literature is to
reduce the connotative semiotic to its content plane only, context, and to
exclude its denotative expression plane, language, from the connotative
semiotic. In this same misunderstanding, varieties of a *denotative*
semiotic, register and genre (in the sense of text type), are modelled as
(the content plane of) a *connotative* semiotic.
