Friends of Switzer Canyon
I met on Thursday with city staff to review the erosion in the canyon and the
emergency projects. Several takeaways:
- the work done in the last month was 1) an emergency project to protect the
sewer near the Olive St entrance, and 2) an emergency storm water project to
protect property near the Redwood/32ND St entrance. I was told that, since
these are emergency projects, the only allowed actions are those that to
alleviate the danger.
- A more permanent solution to stabilize the stream will require a holistic
approach that we’ve started referring to as a “Master Plan”. We will be
encouraging the city to develop this plan so that the stream is stabilized and
we can keep more soil and water on the land.
- We discussed upcoming Group Job 828, a stormwater replacement project. The
good news is that the plan intends to extend several storm drains so that they
enter closer to the stream. The bad news is that the plan may try to
incorporate a “105” style dissipator which involves a lot of concrete near the
exit. Concrete is not preferred since it reduces area for habitat, attracts
graffiti and is expensive to maintain.
SD Canyonlands' consulting engineer advises that a design which uses a pipe
with internal ring dissipators coupled with a 104 style outflow (primarily
riprap) will be cheaper and less intrusive. So, we will be advocating that
design in the plan.
