Friends of Switzer Canyon,
Here’s an opportunity to speak up and say that our stormwater infrastructure
needs improvement.
If you follow the link below to the July 15th Environment Committee, you’ll
find talking points.
I plan to say that we can do a better job of capturing stormwater and using it
to restore stream functions, which will allow us to have a healthy riparian
forest.
This will help meet climate action plan goals and also improve our local parks.
Best
Carrie
We need you to help advocate for San Diego's birds and other wildlife, and the
natural resources and climate which they depend on! We are looking for
advocates to help with two issues next week: On Monday, July 12th, City
Council will be reviewing the recent Audit of the City's Climate Action Plan,
which found that the City is falling behind in implementing this plan to reduce
the impacts of climate change. Our partners with the San Diego Green New Deal
Alliance are hosting a press conference at City Hall at noon, and the Committee
meeting begins at 2 pm. Please consider joining us for the in-person press
conference (one of the speakers will be Andrew Meyer, our ReWild project
manager), or calling in and making a public comment during the meeting. The
meeting is over Zoom, click here for the link. Let them know that natural
habitats have immense carbon sequestration value, and that restoration projects
like ReWild Mission Bay should be incentivized through the updated CAP. On
Thursday, July 15th, the Environment Committee will be discussing much needed
improvements to our stormwater infrastructure. Our outdated stormwater system
has negative impacts for our waterways, adjacent communities, and the wildlife
that use these areas. Our partners with San Diego Coastkeeper have been pushing
on this issue for years, and are looking for speakers at the meeting. Find out
how to register and see a list of talking points here. Tell the City that
existing habitats including coastal wetlands, and new green infrastructure and
restoration projects, are a vital part of handling our stormwater issues.
Looking for other issues to get involved with? Consider signing onto this
petition which would ban the use of Mylar balloons in San Diego County.
Helium-filled balloons create hazards for wildlife and litter our beaches and
watersheds, and there are cleaner and more environmentally friendly ways to
celebrate. Please respond to this email directly if you are interested in
participating in next week's advocacy opportunities, or if you have any
questions. You can also reach out to our staff at

Thank you for advocating for San Diego's birds, other wildlife and their
habitats!
