We tried using a high power laser hitting a mirror and up the nozzle. Couldn't
get it ignited.

I have often thought about doing something similar but with the second
phase (mode) a Ti sparky. Get off the pad and the sparks kick in
later. Seems safer from a fire hazard and also freaking cool !
