Windows 10 works fine for me and if you get the creators upgrade and use the
latest versions of JAWS, the alt key will work. As for windows 10 having poorer
sound quality, that is not true. An audio file whatever its file extension is
an audio file in both versions of Windows and sounds just the same on the same
system. As for audacity, I'm not sure about that, but it is not the only
software package out there.

Windows 10 latest edition.
I'm having the exact same problem with the Alt keys not allowing me to press
letter keys in Widnows 10. Unfortunately I'm not the biggest fan of 10, and
here's why:
My old windows 7 laptop fried and all the files had been deleted for some
stupid reason. However, I didn't really lose too much, as I have most of my
stuff stored on an external drive.
Well, the other day my dad purchased a brand-new Dell laptop with Windows 10 on
it, but I don't like it at all. My X-girlfriend Deborah told me she doesn't
really like Windows 10 as much as Windows 7, and she's totally right. Suffice
to say, it has the worst sound quality ever, and to make matters worse,
Audacity (which I use in conjunction with Studio Recorder) won't even do a
single thing on this system!
I use Audacity quite extensively as a blind person (yes, I did install Jaws),
and when one of my favorite programs is totally useless I guess I have two
horrible options.
1) Downgrade to windows 7 which I'd prefer to do, though I don't know if this
is possible because Windows 10 had been installed clean onto this brand-new
laptop with nothing on it before. Or, 2) If I can't get windows 7 I'd either
get a Mac (hey, I think SR should also have a Mac version, my girlfriend Bree
is complaining about this too), or if that fails, I'd kill myself. I mean, I
hate the fact I can't even use Audacity at all on a brand new laptop! I guess
Microsoft should be screwed or...
My laptop has installed the latest Microsoft updates, and the program opens
fine, but it isn't until I literally click the Import button that the crash
occurs. I am delighted, however, that Google Chrome and Studio Recorder both
work really easy breezy. now just to get Audacity to cooperate... barely
possible I'd take it. If I can't use Audacity, I can't live!

Just FYI I am using the latest versions of JAWS 18 and JAWS 2018 with

Sometimes an uninstall of JAWS and shared components and then a fresh
reinstall can help. Fortunately Narrator works pretty well these days
when you are not able to use JAWS.
Good luck.

Hello Pete,
Thanks for taking the time to respond and provide this very helpful advice!
It is nice to know a solution is at hand. I have put off going past
JAWS 17, because folks seemed to be having a lot of problems with at
least the earlier versions of JAWS 18. I just tried the JAWS 2018
Beta, but for some reason the performance was poor in many respects on
simple general and generic Windows actions. It also somehow messed up
my JAWS 17, creating vague unexplained long periods of JAWS being
silent. So with your email as inspiration, I will start from scratch,
and hopefully regain the full Studio Recorder functionality.

This was a problem for a while with JAWS and Windows 10. The problem
has now been resolved using the latest JAWS 18 and latest version of Windows
10.
I don't know whether it was a Microsoft fix or fix to JAWS.
Try the latest version of JAWS you can get hold of (maybe even a demo
version of JAWS 18 or 2018 if you can). That should nail down the issue.
I too had this problem for a while but it is now resolved using the
latest versions of everything.

Subject: [studiorecorder] Alt menu keyboard commands not working for
me in Windows 10 latest edition.
Hi All,
I recently had to buy a new computer, and entered into what was for me
the first time using Windows 10. I am used to it now, and like it
better in some respects.
I installed Studio Recorder without issue and the basics work well. I
am Running JAWS 17 with the latest version, the one to handle my up to
date Windows 10.
My issue is that the old standard alt key plus a letter commands, e.g.
alt f to open the file menu, e to save as MP3, no longer work.
As an example, although I can press the alt key by itself and get into
all the menus, I cannot use the old alt plus f command to open the
file menu directly. I cannot open any of the alt key menus with the
old direct command as described above. Again, this is a convenience
issue only, but it is harder. I just remembered another piece of this
that actually does significantly increase the time to get to any given
menu item. Even when I am in, for example the file menu, the shortcut
key commands within that menu also do not work for me, I have to
manually use the arrow keys to get anywhere.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. All the rest of Studio
Recorder seems be working as I was used to.
