I know drafting a QB is a crap shoot. Many argue this is not the year and next
year's class is loaded. Some say that is BS and there will be quality starters
from this class as well. No matter what you believe you are likely wrong as the
majority of QBs are average, below average or busts.
I started looking over recent draft classes and focused on the Top 5 QBs taken
so this year would likely encompass Willis, Pickett, Ridder, Howell and Corral.
(some are a little deceiving in that they weren't alot of high QB picks taken)
2021 Larwence , Wilson, Lance, Fields and Jones. Won't judge just yet, but also
need to look at Mills in the 3rd.
2020 Burrow, Tua, Herbert, Love and Hurts. Jury deliberating but 4 starters and
promise
2019 Murray, D. Jones, Haskins ,Lock and Grier. Getting uglier
2018 Baker, Darnold, Allen, Rosen and Lamar 3rd and 5th are legit top tier
QBs....the rest?
2017 Mitch, Mahomes, Watson, Kizer and Webb. 2 superstars taken 2nd and 3rd QB
off board and a really hopeful reclamation project for our beloved Steelers
2016 Goff, Wentz, Lynch, Hackenberg and Brissett (Dak in 6th) 2 that looked
like risers, but didn't and one veteran journeyman.
2015 Winston, Mariota, Grayson, Mannion and Petty. 2 injured guys that never
lived up to potential and who's who of who is that?
2014 Bortles, Manziel, Bridgewater, Carr and Jimmy G Carr and Jimmy in 2nd Rd
is good value and Teddy will keep playing but never be what people hoped.
2013 Manuel, Geno Smith, Glennon, Barkley and Nassib. Not a legit starter among
the bunch
2012 Luck, RG3, Tannehill, Weeden and Osweiler ( Wilson, Foles, Cousins all
later)
Easily the most overall success but not in the order people thought
So the big question is how do we know if the 2022 class horrific like 2013,
average like 2014 or looks solid like 2020?
Sadly , we can't be sure. I understand wanting a mobile QB, but to take one to
take one isn't a guarantee of success.
I can also envision the Steelers not drafting a QB, continuing to build a
really solid all around roster and looking at next year's class if Mitch is a
bomb.
If Mitch can be Tannehil like I can live with that for a year or 2 , build the
team and get a QB later. If the team genuinely thinks Ridder or Willis is the
future so be it.
I just hope the powers that be get it right either way.
My vote is get a S, WR and build depth without going QB. That said, I still
like Strong in the 3rd and would not argue if Howell or Ridder fell to the 2nd.
What are your thoughts?
