Timelapse: Landsat Satellite Images of Climate Change, via Google Earth
Engine
Today's site offers the extraordinary accomplishment achieved by a
collaboration of Google, NASA's Landsat division, the U.S. Geological Survey,
and Time magazine to produce timelapse images of Earth. Gentle Subscribers will
discover an outstanding resource depicting our Earth from space over the course
of three decades, a project designed to reveal to the general public changes
occurring to the planet.
"Spacecraft and telescopes are not built by people interested in what's going
on at home. Rockets fly in one direction: up. Telescopes point in one
direction: out. Of all the cosmic bodies studied in the long history of
astronomy and space travel, the one that got the least attention was the one
that ought to matter most to us -- Earth." - from the website
Accompanied by explanatory commentary, the presentation is divided first by
particularly dramatic timelapse sequences from Dubai, the Amazon, the Columbia
Glacier, Las Vegas, and finally an all-encompassing Explore the World. The text
explores the areas of Time and Space, recounts the Satellite Story, and
chronicles narratives of Extreme Resources, Climate Change, and the Urban
Explosion. Specific regions are showcased, from the Oil Sands of northern
Canada to the Wyoming Coal fields, from the ever expanding city of Shanghai to
the disappearing Lake Urmia in the Middle East. A particular highlight,
however, allows visitors to search for a specific location of their own
choosing under the Explore the World section. An additional feature includes
straightforward land-based photography to illuminate the text.
