        The World of Explosives

Today's site provides an interesting perspective, that of the professional
engineers who manage explosives, on how this always riveting technology has
allowed society to develop in a number of different aspects. Gentle
Subscribers will uncover the science beneath this fascinating technology.

"This site was developed for the general public by the Society of
Explosives Engineers, Inc. to show the important role explosives have
played in the development of our society. Explosives have had a profound
influence on every individual. Their use in the extraction of materials
(metals, rock, coal) and application in the building of roads, dams,
foundations, tunnels and railroads have made our standard of living what it
is today." - from the website

Beginning with the "History of Explosives" section, the presentation
features an informative timeline displaying the earliest known use of
explosives in 50 BC in China and their use up to the present day.
Additional sections offer an overview of how explosives have determined our
world, take a brief look at the science underpinning these chemicals, and
include safety considerations. A highlight of the presentation throws the
spotlight on the uses of explosives, from controlling avalanches to the
pyrotechnics of firework displays, to their role in the creation of the
famous monument at Mount Rushmore.
