Site of the Day for Wednesday, September 11, 2002 The Museum of Reconstructions The List offers a website to provide a moment of respite for its gentle members. This site, a collaboration of Princeton University, the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Museum, provides images which attempt to recreate in exacting and accurate detail magnificent ancient structures. "Traditional museums have collected and studied the shattered remains of ancient cultures for centuries. Now The Museum of Reconstructions (MOR) is advancing the scientific study of art history by reconstructing ruined masterpieces using three-dimensional modeling technology. Developed in collaboration with leading archaeologists, MOR reconstructions incorporate all known information concerning the original state of a site and include dimensionally accurate 3D computer models based on existing publications and physical surveys. The accuracy and completeness of the reconstructions makes it possible to scientifically study the intended visual effect of ruined masterpieces of art." - from the website The site is less than ideally designed. From the "Welcome" page, the "Exhibition" link on the left will take visitors to the Mnesicles' Propylaia exhibit, the first in a planned series of digital reconstructions of the ancient Athenian Acropolis. The exhibit would benefit from a graphic overview of the "Sacred Road". The Mnesicles' Propylaia, "or entrance gateway of the Athenian Acropolis was one of the most innovative and renowned buildings of Classical Antiquity" and its digital recreations are stunningly beautiful.
