Review Skeptic
Today's site offers a service instituted initially by Cornell University in an
effort to even the playing field between travelers and hostelries by
determining if a hotel or B&B review was legitimate. Gentle Subscribers who
have had the misfortune to be lured into staying in accommodations which bore
little resemblance to their glowing online reviews will appreciate this project.
"Review Skeptic is based on research at Cornell University that uses machine
learning to identify fake hotel reviews with nearly 90% accuracy. Learn more
about the research at the Cornell Chronicle and the New York Times." - from the
website
This simple page provides a box for visitors to paste review texts and then
proceeds, through the magic of higher mathematics, to make a ruthlessly
accurate determination on the validity of the review. Although the site
includes a disclaimer that the service is offered for entertainment purposes
only, visitors will, in fact, be vastly entertained if a too-good-to-be-true
review triggers an invalid warning. Additional information behind the
fascinating research and publication which led to the service is available
through a link to a Cornell University report.
