Site of the Day for Monday, August 31, 2009 Recuva - Software of the Month This month's program, Recuva, from Piriform, a British software company, is a file recovery program for the restoration of unintentional deletion mishaps from computers and other digital media. Designed for the Windows platform, the most recent version, 1.29, has been noted for its ease of use and overall effectiveness. Accidents happen. Even the most careful computer user will almost certainly experience that "oops" scenario where a needed file slips from recycle bin into the great void beyond, before Windows can helpfully offer to restore it. As most computers users know from repeated warnings, the less disturbance undergone by a hard drive after an accidental deletion, the better the chances of the file being recovered. After an accident is not the time for a desperate search for software to remedy the situation; that time is now. Recuva features a pleasant and simple to use interface and comes equipped with a wizard for those so rattled by their data loss as to require some additional hand holding. The program scans a user selected drive and compiles a list of deleted but recoverable files. The program can even tackle the restoration of files from camera memory cards, flash drives and MP3 players, while the latest release has added support for Thunderbird e-mails. Although such a program can be invaluable in the crisis of lost data, it is highly recommended that downloading the least intrusive of the available versions may be the best course of action. This appears to be the Portable version, a 1,797 kb zip file, available at the "builds" page of the program's website at: http://www.recuva.com/download/builds Additional information, along with screenshots of the application can be accessed at Recuva's home page but canny computer users will want to avoid the default program download, especially since it comes bundled with an unnecessary toolbar. http://www.recuva.com/ A.M.
