        Project for Public Spaces

Today's site, from the Project for Public Spaces organization, provides an
overview of past successes and current efforts to transform urban
environments into more livable, human-centered communities. Civic-minded
and public-spirited Gentle Subscribers will find both inspiration and
information in this noteworthy publication.

"Project for Public Spaces (PPS) is a nonprofit planning, design and
educational organization dedicated to helping people create and sustain
public spaces that build stronger communities. Our pioneering Placemaking
approach helps citizens transform their public spaces into vital places
that highlight local assets, spur rejuvenation and serve common needs ...
we improve communities by fostering successful public spaces." - from the
website

Focused on illustrating how the Project for Public Spaces assists ordinary
people in taking charge of their environments to improve the quality of
life in cities grown increasingly large, the presentation includes
categories devoted to projects, training, and services. From encouraging
the development of local farmers' markets, to creating viable bike paths,
pedestrian walkways, and public spaces for people, the site outlines
undertakings that have been dear to the hearts of local residents from
Austin to New York, as well as internationally. Rich in useful resources,
the site also offers their "Placemaking" Blog -- their buzzword for the
"planning, design and management of public spaces" -- to keep events,
projects, and news up-to-date.
