Privacy Badger - Software of the Month
This month's software from the Electronic Frontier Foundation is a browser
add-on suitable for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, although plans have been made
to include Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Edge in the future. This handy
extension tackles the job of preventing websites from spying and tracking their
visitors.
When the add-on detects attempts to track, for example when a site contains ads
with software which will follow the visitor to the next webpage visited,
Privacy Badger takes note and blocks any further tracking efforts on the part
of that source. Differing from the more standard and straightforward ad
blocking software, Privacy Badger zeros in on tracking scripts, not ads. If an
ad does not employ third party tracking tactics, Privacy Badger will leave it
severely alone; it usually can be run in conjunction with ad blocking software.
The program was developed because of the ongoing privacy invasion by a
significant number of advertising companies, even when browsers began offering
Do Not Track notices within their settings. When ad companies continued to
ignore these requests, this software add-on was developed by EFF Technologists
to thwart them.
As a boon for users of Firefox's older versions, Privacy Badger is available at
the Mozilla Firefox add-on site, working with Firefox down to v.21.
