Photos The Incredible Legacy of the Bauhaus School of Design
Today's site offers a special promotion in the Smithsonian magazine by the
German government in celebration of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the
founding of the Bauhaus School. Gentle Subscribers will discover instant
recognition of the Bauhaus style with even the briefest glance at the works it
produced.
"Lasting just 14 years, the Bauhaus school revolutionized the art world in the
early 20th century. The brainchild of architect Walter Gropius, it established
the principles of modern design and produced a generation of artists who would
go on to design such iconic buildings as the MetLife Building and Whitney
Museum of American Art in New York. Opened in 1919 in the town of Weimar in
Thuringia, Germany, the Bauhaus mission was to unify art, design and crafts as
a symbol of a new and coming future." - from the website
With its welcoming design, this exhibit serves to encourage interest in next
year's celebratory events in Germany. Highlighting its artistic sensibility,
the exhibition illustrates how the Bauhaus School determinedly eschewed the
designs of the past in the aftermath of World War I. With photos of some of its
most famous architectural structures both in Europe and America, it includes
not only corporate and university buildings but private residences as well.
Among the more than a dozen images of Bauhaus works is an interior view of the
Haus Auerbach, a home designed by Gropius and Meyer in 1924, showcasing
furniture which still exemplifies the concept of clean-lined modernity.
