Special Cheery Greetings to all those Celebrating the July 1st Canada Day
Extravaganza of Canada's 150 Year Birthday!
OnThisDay
Today's site, from Library and Archives Canada, in keeping with the modest
hoopla surrounding the 150 year anniversary of Canada's creation, offers
vignettes about Canada's history which are dotted throughout a relatively quiet
past. Gentle Subscribers will discover a collection of mildly interesting and
informative stories from days gone by.
"OnThisDay ... in Canada's history! On this page, you'll discover significant
events that shaped our society. ... we share 150 years of history, one day at
a time!"
Designed to be viewed as either a slideshow or as separate webpages, the
presentation begins, logically enough, with a portrait of the Fathers of
Confederation for July 1st. Each item includes further information and details
about the specific highlight as well as links to relevant sites. Encompassing
the first ten days of July, the selection features events such as the country's
hottest recorded temperature in the little town of Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan,
the Joggins Fossil Cliffs on the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia becoming a UNESCO
World Heritage site, and a brief account of a seven year old who fell into
Niagara Falls but survived.
