Special Greetings to those Observing Remembrance Day and Veterans Day
Newspaper Pictorials: Word War I Rotogravures
Today's site, from the American Memory Project at the Library of Congress,
offers its notable collection of photographs originally published in the
quality press during the Great War. Gentle Subscribers will discover hundreds
of evocative images of World War I which attempted to keep the home front aware
of the military campaign across the sea.
"This online collection is drawn from three primary sources: The War of the
Nations: Portfolio in Rotogravure Etchings, a volume published by the New York
Times shortly after the armistice that compiled selected images from their
'Mid-Week Pictorial' supplements of 1914-19; Sunday rotogravure sections from
the New York Times for 1914-19; and Sunday rotogravure sections from the New
York Tribune for 1916-19." - from the website
As is the case with most collections of the American Memory Project, the
presentation provides a straightforward layout with an introductory article
discussing its the purpose and significance. The Gallery highlights a number of
unique images -- the Camel Corps, German Tank Traps, and a diagram of a German
submarine interior. Additional features include informative articles with a
timeline, origins of the war, its cost, casualty figures, and President
Wilson's famous Fourteen Points delivered in early 1918. Correct citations for
all the items in the collection are available for academic reference.
