Meteor Shower Calendar 2021-2022
Today's site from the American Meteor Society offers their current calendar
marking the occurrences of meteor showers slated to be visible from now to
September 2022. Gentle Subscribers will find a useful mix of relevant astronomy
details and helpful meteor shower schedules.
"A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed
to radiate, or originate, from one point in the night sky called Radiant. These
meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering
Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. The
Meteor Data Center ... lists over 900 suspected meteor showers of which about
100 are well established." - from the website
After an introduction on the effects of the moon and the time of night on
optimal meteor shower viewing, the presentation launches into a straightforward
display of the currently active meteor showers. These detail the period of
activity, its peak, and the relevant moon phase. Further information on the
best known of named meteor showers, such as the Leonids and the Orionids, is
available as well. Carrying through to September 2022, the annual report
concludes with the most famous of the group -- the Perseids. Additional
