Site of the Day for Friday, April 29, 2011 MP3Tag: Software of the Month One of the more tedious tasks in dealing with audio collections is burrowing through ID3 tag information to check whether sufficient data is available to facilitate an easy transition from hard drive to a digital audio player. Among the growing number of audio tag editors, one of the best designed for the Windows platform comes from German programmer Florian Heidenreich. With the recent release of version 2.48, MP3Tag offers a conventional, user-friendly interface, a highly desirable quality in an area which has sufficient hiccups without the unwanted complication of a non-standard design. Among this program's easy-to-use tools, the auto-numbering wizard ranks high on the list of simplifying a frequent chore for audiobook fans, who must ensure that track numbers are in proper sequence in order for audio files to be useable in many digital audio devices -- mp3 players from various manufacturers. Further simplifying essential tasks, bulk editing to insert the correct genre, add album details, cover art, lyrics and comments can be easily accomplished. In addition, MP3Tag will query a number of databases, to retrieve the required Tag information. Under the Convert menu the application offers useful tag to filename and filename to tag conversion options. While providing a handy preview for a number of its editing tasks, one of the program's most helpful features is its reassuring undo capability. Because of this, when working with the often unfamiliar concept of "Regular Expressions", the ordinary computer user can experiment without undue concern about irreparably damaging files. As well as dealing with the ubiquitous MP3 format, the application also handles a variety of other types, including flac, ape, ogg, acc and wma among others, while the help files, competently written in fluent English, add a useful level of support to the program. MP3Tag stands out from others in its field because of its generally successful efforts to be functional for the ordinary user. With its well-designed interface, helpful automated tools and wizards and its generous list of online databases, the application may be the most useful in its class.
