Lick Observatory Records Digital Archive
Today's site, from the University of California-Santa Cruz's digital
collections, offers a notable repository of images from one of the most famous
astronomical installations -- the Lick Observatory on the summit of Mount
Hamilton. Gentle Subscribers will discover an impressive data collection on
this renowned observatory, with an emphasis on the scientists who pioneered its
beginnings and achieved its many discoveries.
"The Lick Observatory Archive documents one of the most historically important
observatories in the world, and are a unique resource for the study of the
history of modern astronomy. The digital collection contains digitized
historical photographs and includes portraits of astronomers, telescope and
lens makers and other prominent scientists, scenes of life at the observatory
on Mount Hamilton, instruments, and documentation of expeditions." - from the
website
With more than 1300 images in the archive, the site provides a fascinating
glimpse of life at the observatory, from its completion in 1888 and onwards.
With both searchable and browsable capabilities, the digital collection
features photographs of telescopes, lenses, and its scientists, along with
correspondence, diaries, and logs from those who manned the installation. As
the world's oldest residential observatory, with, at one time, the largest
refracting telescope, its history encompasses the development of modern
astronomical science as evidenced in the documentation available in this
archive.
