        Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load

From the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University comes a web
page to explain the hot topic of glycemic load and its relationship to
carbohydrates. Gentle Subscribers attempting to make sense of the current
attention to "low carb" food regimes may find the site useful in clarifying
a number of the issues involved in the controversy.

"The Linus Pauling Institute's Micronutrient Information Center is a source
for up-to-date, scientifically accurate information regarding the roles of
specific vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals (plant chemicals that may
affect health), and other nutrients in preventing disease and promoting
health." - from the website

The web page offers information on "measuring the glycemic index of foods
and the physiological responses to high -- versus low -- glycemic index
foods". Disease prevention for conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular
diseases, obesity and cancer are examined with respect to the topic. A
brief guide for glycemic load reduction and an abbreviated table of
selected foods are included, along with a link to Australia's University of
Sydney's extensive Glycemic Index Database.

load at:
