        Healthy Pets, Healthy People

The List offers a helpful website from the National Center for Infectious
Diseases focused on maintaining a physically healthy relationship between
people and their animal companions. Gentle Members will find both
reassurance and information at this authoritative site under the aegis of
the Centers for Disease Control.

"Pets provide many benefits to humans. They comfort us and they give us
companionship. However, some animals can also pass diseases to people.
These diseases are called zoonoses. . . Although animals can carry germs,
it is important to know that you are more likely to get some of these germs
from contaminated food or water than from your pet or another animal you
encounter. CDC has created this Web site to provide you with information
about the health-related risks of owning and caring for animals. We
encourage you to follow the links located throughout this Web site for
general information about companion and wild animals and the diseases they
can carry." - from the website

The site site provides safety precautions and sensible advice for those who
may be slightly more at risk from "zoonotic transmission", specific
diseases related to various domestic animals and a glossary. Additional
resources include links to highly technical research papers dealing with
the topic, guidelines for those working with domestic animals and
information on the health benefits of pets for their human companions
