        Atapuerca

The List presents a fascinating website under the aegis of the Universidad
Complutense de Madrid in Spain. Gentle Members with a predilection for
archaeology may be riveted by the controversial discoveries showcased at
this site.

"In a small hill east of Burgos, evidence of the presence and lifeways of
prehistoric humanity is preserved, spanning the time from one million years
ago to the present. . . Throughout the centuries, many different human
groups have lived and left their marks on the Sierra de Atapuerca, which at
different times in its history has been a refuge, hunting ground,
sanctuary, battleground, landmark, limestone quarry and, finally,
archaeological site."

Some of the highlights of the site include the three-dimensional Virtual
Fossils section which requires a VRML plug-in, (CosmoPlayer is recommended
by the site), Fauna - dealing with the animals that inhabited the Sierra de
Atapuerca during the Middle Pleistocene era, Human Evolution - an
extrapolation on the common ancestor of modern humans and Neanderthals
based on the Homo antecessor fossils excavated at Atapuerca, a trove of
Stone Tools, film clips and panoramic views of Atapuerca. This vast and
prestigious site is also available in Spanish.
