This fascinating site from the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, North Carolina presents an exploration of the culture, artwork and games of Mesoamerica. "The Sport of Life and Death -- The Mesoamerican Ballgame -- an online journey into the ancient spectacle of athletes and gods . . . Journey through time while exploring the rise and fall of nine Mesoamerican cultures over 3,000 years. . . " - from the website The site provides an exploration of nine cultures, including the Maya, Toltec and Aztec while a timeline displays what was happening elsewhere in the world. In the game section are facts about the Mesoamerican use of rubber (1600 BC) Aztec music, information about the game, including the balls used, some with human skulls wrapped within them, the uniforms and playing court. The game may be either viewed or played at the site but unlike the original players, a loss will not require Gentle Members to be sacrificed to the gods.
