    U.S. Census: Data Visualization

Today's site, from the U.S. Census Bureau, provides a fascinating collection of
graphically arresting displays designed to vividly enhance the vast store of
their collected data. Gentle Subscribers will discover a splendid array of
infographics illustrating a number pertinent details of 21st century America.

"The Census Bureau is working to increase our use of visualization in making
data available to the public, and this gallery is an early part of that effort.
The first posted visualizations will pertain largely to historical population
data, building on prior work done to portray historical changes in the growth
and redistribution of the U.S. population. For later visualizations, the topics
will expand beyond decennial census data to include the full breadth of Census
Bureau data sets and subject areas, from household and family dynamics, to
migration and geographic mobility, to economic indicators." - from the website

With inforgraphics having become the dernier cri in the presentation of
statistical details, the U.S. Census Bureau has jumped on this happy bandwagon
and instituted a visual gallery to serve up the mountains of figures it
collects. Currently showcased in the gallery are graphics on the Top Languages
Spoken Other Than English, a contrast of Native and Foreign Born without a High
School Education, and Shifting Occupational Shares by gender. A number of the
graphics feature animated components for a definite wow factor, such as the
unassumingly labeled County Coastline Populations from 1800 to 2000, and the
Century of Population Change in the Age and gender Composition of the Nation. A
lively game to challenge a knowledge of U.S. demographic data is offered in the
Population Bracketology visualization.
