Counting Happiness and Where it Comes From
Today's site, from statistician extraordinaire Dr. Nathan Yau and his Flowing
Data firm, offers one of his eye-opening graphics based on happiness data
collected by Megagon Labs. Gentle Subscribers will discover a fascinating
overview of what made people happy during a 24 hour period.
"Researchers asked 10,000 participants to list ten things that recently made
them happy. The result was HappyDB, a collection of 100,000 happy moments. For
each moment, I parsed out the subject, verb, and object to better see what
makes people happy overall. ... For example, someone might have said, 'I
watched a good movie yesterday.' The subject was 'I', the verb was 'watched',
and the object was 'movie'. ...Then I counted and connected the dots." - from
the website
The presentation provides a number of charts outlining what makes people happy.
From Happiness with Others to Happiness with Pets, the leading graphic, with an
edge of 59% over others begins with "I". A text breakdown of the numbers notes
the top 5 beginning with "I" and the top 5 experienced with others, for
example, Son / Gave / Hug. Details about the sample and its collection are
included, along with a link to a related and useful infographic, What Makes
People the Most Happy, located at the conclusion of the presentation.
Unfortunately, the graphics are not expandable except through the usual option
of increasing the size of all the contents of the page itself.
