Beaches US EPA
Today's site from the Environmental Protection Agency offers material covering
the state of America's beaches. Gentle Subscribers beginning to hope that a
trip to the beach may be possible in the not too distant future may find the
content generally a reminder of better days to come.
"Find Information about a Particular U.S. Beach ... Find out about the quality
of the water at beaches and health risks associated with swimming in polluted
water." - from the website
Although the data is slightly out of date in terms of the annual Beach Swimming
Report, there is a wealth of information dealing with coastal beaches and those
of the Great Lakes, the areas of concern to the EPA. Helpful guidance for
public health authorities in dealing with harmful algal bloom (HAB) outbreaks
caused by cyanobacteria with details useful for the public, and a
discouragingly long list of possible health hazards which may result from a day
of sea and sand are among the concerns raised. Being knowledgeable beforehand
may reduce these to the expected touch of sunburn and a bit of sand in the ham
sandwiches.
