Archaeology of the Great War

Today's site, created to commemorate the 100 anniversary of World War One --
the Great War -- offers a stirring exploration of one of the most horrific
conflicts of modern times. Gentle Subscribers will find an evocative and
encompassing audio visual presentation examining the war from a number of
perspectives.

"What role for archaeology? ... Protecting a fragile heritage ... Day-to-day
life ... Day-to-day death ... Archaeology, bearing witness to unspeakable
slaughter"- from the website

Divided into five sections and laden with shattering images, this presentation
is not for the faint-hearted. Its grim archeological evidence reveals life in
the trenches with artifacts used by the soldiers, their equipment, and what
they ate. Historical photographs combined with modern day archeological
excavations uncover hasty burials and unmarked graves. Further sections display
the changing line of the front from 1914 to 1918, while a separate chronology
section highlights the major events of the war. Stories of individual soldiers,
a look at the development of new weaponry, and the war at sea are also included.
