Animal Diversity Web
Today's site, a long running and ongoing project from the University of
Michigan's Museum of Zoology, offers a deeply comprehensive animalia resource.
Gentle Subscribers will find an excellent reference for questions about
virtually any species, living or extinct, at this exceptional site.
"The Animal Diversity Web is an online database and encyclopedia of animal
natural history, built through contributions from students, photographers, and
many others. ... It is a rich and flexible resource designed both as an
encyclopedia for exploring biodiversity and for use in formal, inquiry-based
education." - from the website
While the focus of the project remains expansive in scope, it nevertheless
manages to combine this with impressively detailed information about each
species. The entries generally include photos, and material on Geographic
Range, Habitat, physical characteristics, Reproduction, Life Span, and Behavior
among others. Glossary definitions for zoological terms are available directly
on each species page via mouseover, with many entries linked to Encyclopedia of
Life content (Site of the Day - 12/02/2009). Additional features include
Ecosystem Roles, Conservation Status, a sidebar delineating the species'
taxonomy and excellent citation notes. A further highlight serves up newsworthy
animal stories from around the web.
